LG intros their first 3D notebook with high expectations

LG Electronics gave a preview of their first 3D notebook on Monday, in a Seoul press conference held by LG’s mobile communications PC business team leader, Park Hyung-bong. The 15” XNote R590 3D, along with a complete lineup of 3D PCs and hardware accessories, are poised to take on Samsung and loosen their current hold on nearly 50% of the Korean PC market.

"In the 3D PC-related market, LG can do better than our rival,” said Park Hyung-bong, referring to Samsung. “With a better product lineup, LG also aims to expand its footprint in the lucrative segment."

The XNote R590 3D boasts a 15.6 inch LCD, a Core i7 CPU, and a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M graphics chipset. It will also include SRS Tru-Surround HD compatibility, TriDef software which converts video to 3D in real-time, and a set of polarized 3D glasses.

Park spoke extensively about LG’s future plans for the 3D consumer electronics market, noting that the company has increased its target 3D notebook sales for 2011 by 30%. They expect global sales to reach 1.1 million customers next year, and 13.8 million by 2015.

The XNote R590 3D will be available to Korean consumers in the next couple weeks. LG is planning to introduce their 3D notebook lineup to South America, the Middle East and Africa by the end of this month.  Specific pricing has not yet been announced.

Only time will tell if consumer demand for 3D computers will come close to meeting LG’s expectations, which may be rather lofty considering the slow sales of 3D televisions so far this year. Perhaps 3D computers requiring special glasses will do better than televisions, since they tend to have more solo users.
