The  UHD QD TVs with IPS panels will be a new series next to LG's existing line-up of UHD and OLED displays. According to Reuters the company will first start sales of 55" and 65" models. Quantum dots are small crystals of 2 to 10 nanometers that are able to display colors based on their size. TV manufacturers can place a thin film of the crystals in front of a backlight to make displays with a higher color saturation.

Content that uses the benefits of the large color palette is unfortunately hardly available. The current content on Blu-ray's and HDTV is shot using the REC709 standard. Because QD TVs show colors more intense than recorded in the source video the color fastness is decreased.

In order to fully benefit from the color palette of QD TVs, camera's will need to support the new REC.2020 specification which is able to record almost two times more colors. TVs with quantum dots support displaying content shot in REC.2020 in theory, but cameras supporting the standard are hardly available.

LG isn't the only TV manufacturer using quantum dots. Sony uses them in its Triluminos TVs and Samsung plans to reveals its first TVs using the technology during CES in Las Vegas.
