LG's 3D display goes full HD

LG claims that it has announced the world's first commercially-available 1080p 3D monitor.

The yet-unnamed LCD panel is light on specs, but says its the first 3D display with full HD resolution. Viewsonic and Samsung 3D displays, by comparison, are limited to 1680-by-1050 resolution, and even the setup for NVidia's own 3D Vision Tech doesn't hit 1080p.

LG says its monitor uses a "high performance 3D exclusive controller" for processing twice as much data as existing displays, and has a "copper bus line" to improve resolution and image quality, though I can't find any clear definition of what, exactly, a "copper bus line" does. Users wear shutter glasses to get the 3D effect, which can be turned off for 2D content. LG mentions that a trial service for the first-ever HD 3D terrestrial broadcasting will debut in Korea next year, so this should be a good fit.

Unfortunately, LG's claims of world's first announcement don't necessarily mean world's first release, as no details on pricing or availability were revealed. I imagine that all will be clarified at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, where LG won't be the only hardware manufacturer touting 3D as the future of television. Sony's making a big push into 3D next year, and several companies are working to make 3D Blu-ray a reality. Acer has already released a 3D laptop, and Asus has announced two of its own, suggesting that no screen is safe from what display manufacturers hope is the next big thing.
