Mandatory, automatically installed Windows 10 update caused issues with Nvidia video cards

An automatic driver-update for Nvidia video cards caused issues for Windows 10 Insider Preview users. The update was an outdated version of drivers that users couldn't turn down. Users who installed the mandatory update had issues with multi monitor setups and graphic glitches. Many Windows Insiders complained to Microsoft on Twitter. The culprit was an outdated Nvidia driver that was marked by Windows Update as the latest version.

Users on Reddit report that Microsoft meanwhile distributes a new version of GeForce drivers that solves the issues. Starting with Windows 10, Windows users will automatically have all Windows Updates installed. In the Insider Program Microsoft offers users the choice to receive updates of either the fast or slow ring. In the fast ring the latest updates are available directly after their release, in the slow ring it takes a little longer before they are automatically installed. It's unsure whether Microsoft will also use the fast and slow method in the final version of Windows 10.

In Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Educations users can delay updates for a couple of months, in the Home edition of Windows 10 this isn't possible. There are several solutions for the problem, although Microsoft appears to try to make sure all users get all updates automatically installed. A possible solution is a tool Microsoft offers to block updates for Windows 10 Insider Preview. With this tool it would have been possible to manually block the problematic Nvidia drivers. It's unclear whether this tool will also work on the final version of Windows 10.

Another solution is to disable automatic installation of drivers by searching in the start menu for "change device installation settings" and to disable automatic driver installation in the resulting menu. However, in the latest version of Insider Preview this option doesn't seem to work anymore. In older Windows version users have more control over the updates they want to install.
