Massive screen Motorola Droid X coming to Verizon

Verizon Wireless is scheduled to hold a press conference on June 23rd with some new announcements, but we now know that one of those announcements will pertain to the new Motorola Droid X Android smartphone, which includes a massive screen.

The large 4.3" (possibly 4.4") screen is easily comparable to the HTC EVO, but there are many distinctions that make the Droid X stand out on its own.

The Droid X packs an 854 x 480 resolution screen and is very quick and responsive. Engadget speculates that it includes an OMAP 3630 1GHz ARM v7 processor, powering its speediness. The phone will supposedly ship with 8GB of storage space.

It is slightly longer and wider than the HTC EVO, making it a beast of a phone. The device is very thin, with the exception of a bulge on the top back of the device, which houses the 8MP camera. The camera touts LED flash and impressively supporting 720p video recording.

They claim it can fit into a pants pocket, but I'm a bit weary of the size. It's almost as if smartphones are approaching tablet size now. The Droid X has 4 physical buttons at the bottom, unlike the EVO and the original Motorola Droid, which include touch sensitive "buttons".

Software wise, the phone runs the latest Android version, 2.2, also dubbed Froyo. It features a new, less annoying version of Motorola's "Blur" software for working with online social networks. It's also rumored to support Adobe Flash, making it the first Android phone on the market to do so.

Another app worth mentioning is Blockbuster Movies on Demand. It appears to be preloaded on the device, allowing consumers to purchase video on demand titles while on the go. I'm sure the large screen will be very pleasant for watching films and for recording and playing back video. With an HDMI out jack, you can also pipe that Droid X video feed into a TV or a larger display.

So what's it missing? There's no front-facing camera on the device, which is disappointing as both the HTC EVO and the iPhone 4 include that feature. Other than that, the Motorola Droid X looks like a serious smartphone contender that should be popular throughout the rest of 2010.
