Micron unveils company's fastest SSD

Micron recently announced its new RealSSD C300 solid state drive (SSD) and the company is now promoting it as the fastest SSD offering it has ever introduced.

The 6 Gbit/sec SATA drives will be available with 128GB or 256GB storage capacities, while supporting 1.80-inch and 2.5-inch form factors. The C300 also utilizes 34nm MLC NAND memory while supporting the Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) 2.1 standard.

"The C300 SSD not only delivers on all the inherent advantages of SSDs - improved reliability and lower power use - but also leverages a finely tuned architecture and high-speed ONFI 2.1 NAND to provide a whole new level of performance," said Dean Klein, Micron VP of memory development, in a statement.

Micron hopes SATA 6 Gb/s native support will also help improve performance further, while HDDs with similar capabilities have design limitations.  According to the company, its C300 6Gb/s SATA3 drive will have 355MBps throughput read speed and 215MBps throughput write speeds.

Micron hopes to launch its drives during Q1 2010, but the company hasn't released pricing details yet.

As SSDs finally begin to slide in price, consumers looking for faster, more high-end products can look forward to products similar to the Micron RealSSD C300 in the future.  Ideally, the improved SATA specifications will help boost data throughput, possibly at the cost of higher power management needs.
