Microsoft achieves record sales thanks to Windows 8

Microsoft has reported record revenues thanks to the sales of Windows 8. In the last quarter of 2012, when Windows 8 was launched, the company had a revenue of $21 billion. More than 60 million Windows 8 licenses were sold.

The profit of the company in the second quarter of its financial year  increased 3 percent compared to a year before. The Windows division is the main reason for this with a revenue of $5.8 billion it increased revenues with 25% compared to the year before. Almost $1 billion was earned with upgrades to Windows 8 and Windows 8 pre-sales licenses. The amount of licenses sold is now 60 million, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft's business division, which includes Exchange and SharePoint, performed worse.  The division achieved a revenue of $5.7 billion, 10 percent less than a year earlier. The entertainment and devices division under performed with revenues of $3.8 billion, 11 percent less than a year earlier.

Microsoft doesn't give much details on amounts of sold products except for the number of Windows 8 licenses it has sold.

All in all, Microsoft earned a profit of $ 6.4 billion, 200 million less than a year earlier. In the previous quarter, Microsoft saw a decrease in revenues, partly due to the impending release of Windows 8. A quarter before that Microsoft reported its first loss in 25 years, mainly due to a failed takeover.
