Microsoft announces availability of Windows 8.1 - get it if you can

Microsoft just announced the availability of Windows 8.1, the big update to Windows 8. Only existing Windows 8 users can find the free update in the Windows Store, tomorrow the update will become available for new devices and at retail locations.  The Windows 8.1 update is more than 3.6 GB in size and the Microsoft servers seem to have a hard time keeping up with the downloads. Users report that the Windows Store is sometimes unavailable (We weren't able to connect to the Store error) . If this happens to you, Microsoft recommends to keep trying.

Windows 8.1 is the first major update to Windows 8 and adds several new features to the OS. It makes it possible to boot directly to the traditional desktop again, it adds a start tip as replacement of the start menu and several Metro applications are updated. Microsoft has also added the option to use an animated background and the company has added more help functionality for users to understand the new functionality of the operating system better.

Starting from Windows 8.1 it will no longer be possible upgrade from Windows 7 and retain your installed programs.  All of your desktop applications will need to be reinstalled.  Your data files will remain intact however. It will also not be possible to do an upgrade from Windows XP or Vista straight to Windows 8.1.  Microsoft advises you to buy the full retail disc and do a clean install from it.

Tomorrow Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro will be available as downloads or in  boxed, retail editions containing the necessary dvds to install.  The price for the full versions will be $119.99 for Windows 8.1 and $199.99 for Windows 8.1 Pro.
