A week after the release of a security update for Microsoft Lync Server, the software giant yesterday decided to withdraw a patch for the software. Lync Server (previously known as Microsoft Office Communications Server) is a real time communication platform for enterprises and used for e.g. instant messaging and video conferences. A security update for Lync Server which Microsoft released last week caused issues and has been withdrawn.
Yesterday Microsoft posted an update to their website stating the patch is no longer available. The reason is "a known problem", that prevents users to install the security update for Microsoft Lync Server.
Users complain that after the installation of the update a Windows Security screen appears which states that Windows can't verify the author of the driver software. The culprit appears to be a security certificate issue. The patch should have fixed three vulnerabilities that could allow cybercriminals to perform a Denial of Service attack. Microsoft states it's working on a fix for the problem.
Failing patches appear to be an issue for Microsoft, the company had to withdraw a security patch last month as well. Last week the company also had to withdraw a non-security related patch for OneDrive for Business because it caused issues. The affected update was KB2889866 which was an optional update for Microsoft Office.
The update fixed stability and performance issues and according to Microsoft also issues with the synchronisation of files. The update has now been replaced with a new patch that should solve the issues. OneDrive for Business is a cloud storage service that allows users to store, synchronize and share data on multiple devices.
