Microsoft releases fixed Windows 8.1 August Update - urges to delete old one

Microsoft has released the Windows 8.1 August Update again, the company withdrew the update earlier as some users reported serious issues. The affected Microsoft Security Bulletin is MS14-045 which fixes three vulnerabilities and was first released at the 12th of August.

After the release of the update, users complained on the Microsoft forums that they could not longer boot into Windows and/or received Blue Screens of Death with the error message "0x50 Stop Error". Users also reported issues with fonts.

Microsoft decided to withdraw the update and advised users with problems to delete security update 2982791. An alleged Microsoft employee confirmed the company had issues with the update but that only 0.01% of the computers was affected.

To solve the issues with security update 2982791, Microsoft released Security Bulletin MS14-05 again and replaced the 2982791 update with update 2993651. The company has expired the 2982791 update and all Windows users have to download and install the new update. Microsoft advises Windows users to first remove the old update before applying the new update.
