Microsoft releases fixes for Windows 8.1 Spring Update install errors

Microsoft released two patches already for users who received error codes 80070020, 80073712 and 0x800f081f  and were unable to install the Windows 8.1 Spring Update released Tuesday last week. It's not uncommon for users to be unable to install Windows 8 updates but often Microsoft is fast in providing fixes.

After a large update is released the Microsoft Answers Forums usually see a lot of additional activity. This time many users reported getting error codes 80070020, 80073712 and 0x800f081f which prevented them from installing the Windows 8.1 Spring Update. It appears that this is caused by corrupt files and a failure to remove them properly when you try to update again. A patch is available which requires a restart after its applied.

Users also reported they can no longer remove IIS from their systems after updating. Microsoft has confirmed this issue and released a patch to make uninstalling IIS again.

Unfortunately some users report that they still have been unable to install Windows 8.1 Spring Update. Users Andrew-B has posted a solution on his website, which involves using the Windows Command Line to remove the corrupt files.

The Windows 8.1 Spring Ipdate brings resizing of tiles, a power and search icon on the Metro screen and newly installed applications are highlighted. More features include running and pinning Metro applications on the taskbar in the desktop. This means running Metro applications is now similar to running traditional applications. You can also opt to disable the ability of Metro appearing on the taskbar.

Metro applications also get close and minimize buttons and an option to split apps, so you can have a Metro application running on one side and the desktop on the other side.

This update also renames all Skydrive references to OneDrive and more configuration options become available in Metro.
