Microsoft releases Office 2010 pricing

Microsoft announced pricing information for its latest Office 2010 software, with prices ranging from $99 to $499.

The latest edition of Office will be available in four different editions, with Microsoft providing software for college students to business professionals working in the enterprise.

Office Professional Academic, which will be available on college campuses, has the $99 price tag, with Microsoft providing software to students for lower prices.  The software package includes Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, OneNote and Access, according to a Microsoft release.

Office Home and Business will be available for $279 (retail package software CD) or $199 (product key card), and it will ship with Outlook, Publisher, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote.  The Office Home and Student, priced at $149 (software) or $119 (key card), includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote.

Office 2010 Professional will be $499 boxed, or $349 for the digital copy -- the software suite has a variety of tools and additional features aimed for enterprise users.  With the high cost of this edition, most consumers will opt to use one of the other three editions instead.

All Office 2010 customers will be able to use Office Web, Microsoft's cloud-based version of its software.  Taking it a step further, Microsoft will offer a free version of Office Web at some point this year, but it won't have the full features of regular Office 2010.

Microsoft has come under pressure from open word processors, including Open Office, AbiWord, Google Docs and other free alternatives.  Microsoft Office remains the most popular Windows-based office suite, but Open Office and Google have forced Microsoft to adapt.
