Microsoft releases Word, Excel and Powerpoint for Windows 10

Microsoft today released previews of Word, Excel and Powerpoint for Office for Windows 10. The apps can be installed on computers running Windows 10 Technical Preview. Previews of the same apps for smartphones will be released the coming weeks.

The apps can be downloaded from the Windows Store beta which was released together with a new build of Windows 10 Technical Preview recently. The apps are so-called "Universal Apps"  which work on different devices running Windows 10. All versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint are optimized for touchscreens but smartphone versions of the apps will follow in the coming weeks. The apps that became available today are for laptops, PCs and tablets with touchscreens, according to Microsoft.

Office for Windows 10 will be installed by default on smartphones and small tablets running the operating system. Other devices running Windows 10 will be able to download the apps from the Windows Store. Besides Word, Excel and Powerpoint the suite will also consist of OneNote and Outlook. Microsoft announced Office for Windows 10 on January 21 this year.

A  more extensive version of the office suite will be named Office 16 and is the successor to Office 2013. Recently Microsoft announced this version should be released in the second half of 2015.
