Microsoft to release Xbox One without optical drive - changes mind again?

Microsoft is planning to release a cheaper version of the Xbox One console. The device would feature the Kinect gesture controller but lacks an optical disk drive. If true, games can only be downloaded to this cheaper Xbox One. Microsoft at least tested the Xbox One without an optical drive, according to Microsoft insider Tom Warren.

He responded to a rumor posted on the forums of gamers website Neogaf. Whether the cheaper console will actually become available, couldn't be confirmed by Warren. The poster on the Neogaf forums posted the console will be sold for $399.

The Xbox One should also become available in white, and Microsoft is allegedly planning a 1 TB version of the console. Currently the Xbox One has a 500 GB HDD. The latter should become available in November, while the release of the white version remains unclear.

Earlier this month we reported that Microsoft changed its mind on a disc-less Xbox One.  In the end the company decided to add the disk drive because  Xbox One games can take up several gigabytes and in many countries the available bandwidth would not be sufficient.  Also many players still prefer to purchase a game on a physical medium to be able to sell or lend it. When the rumors are true, Microsoft somehow seems to have changed its mind again.
