Microsoft warns of security risks caused by end of Office 2007 support

Microsoft in the Netherlands warns users and organisations who still work with Office 2007, that support of the office suite ends by October this year. After that, no more (security) updates for Office 2007 will be released. Using the software after October is therefore a security risk.

Office 2007 is more than 10 years old, it was released on the 30th of January 2007. The software has been the target of several zero-day attacks in recent years. Also this year, in April, Microsoft warned for an actively exploited zero-day vulnerability. Only opening a document was sufficient to provide an attacker with full control over the system. This way a banking Trojan was distributed through the Office vulnerability, which allowed cybercriminals to steal data for internet banking.

The issue underlines the risk of using non-supported software.

Microsoft advices organisations to contact their IT supplier or Microsoft on how to deal with the end of support of Office 2007, which could involve upgrading to newer, still supported versions of the office suite. Home users can get a new version of Office from the Microsoft Store.
