Microsoft withdraws Windows 8.1 August Update after boot failures

Microsoft has withdrawn four patches that were part of  Microsoft's Windows 8.1 August Update. The patches caused severe issues with Windows 8.1, including systems that failed to boot after installation of the patches. Microsoft has posted possible workarounds for those who have a failing system after the update.

The withdrawn patches are  KB2982791, KB2970228, KB2975719 and KB2975331. Especially the KB2982791 and  KB2975719 updates caused boot failures on many Windows 8.1 systems. Last week users started to complain on the Microsoft support forums about the update. They reported they received  'Stop Errors' after they installed the Windows 8.1 August Update through Windows Update.

Microsoft reports  the issue is hard to solve but nevertheless has posted possible workarounds on its website that should assist users in booting into Windows 8.1 again. The company also recommends to uninstall the affected updates.

It's unclear how the failing patches passed Microsoft's quality control.  According to a Microsoft support employee the issues are investigated by the team responsible for releasing and testing updates.
