Microsoft's phone division reports loss of 72%

Microsoft made about $20.5 billion in revenues the last quarter. In the same period last year the company reported a revenue of about $20.4 billion. The growth is especially fueled by the increasing popularity of Microsoft's business services such as its Azure cloud service which reported a growth of 116%.

The net income was down from $4.9 billion in the third quarter last year to $4.7 billion in the last quarter. The earnings per share grew from $0.68 to $0.76.

Microsoft also saw an increase in revenue of its subscription service Office 365, the online office suite grew with 51%. With Windows 10 the software giant made no profit but also no loss, while phone revenue declined with 72%. The company's Surface branch continues to be succesful and reported a growth of 38%.

And while Microsoft reports more revenue from Xbox software and services, its entire gaming activities saw a revenue decrease of 5%. This is mainly caused by the losses the company makes on its console sales.

Bing's revenue grew with 9% caused by larger search volumes and increased revenue per search.

Further, Microsoft expects to finally close the acquisition of the social network LinkedIn in this quarter.
