Mobile web browsing continues dramatic growth

Opera recently issued a report indicating global mobile data traffic saw its best growth in the past seven months during October, with future growth expected to continue.

According to the company, the use of Opera grew 16% during the month of October -- and has steadily grown while the smartphone industry matures.

Wireless providers currently worried about the decline in cost of voice plans are now signing subscribers up for unlimited text and data plans to help drive up revenue.  Furthermore, mobile social networking and banking are extremely appealing to consumers, as the amount of mobile content also increases.

Opera has 39.6 million people using the Opera Mini Web browser, with 26.4% of the mobile Web market -- it had 32 million users two months prior to October.  The Apple iPhone is in the No. 2 position with 22.1%, and Nokia rounds out the top three with 19.7%.

Opera expects to continue marketing its mobile browser to users in North America and Europe, but also has a strong interest in emerging nations, where it sometimes has more than 50% market control.

Research In Motion, Nokia, Apple and other companies have developed their own native Internet browsers to include in phones, but users still turn to Opera and other third-party browsers.  RIM recently purchased browser company Torch as the company looks to continue improving its browser, which some phone owners -- including myself -- have complained about.
