MSI releases BIOS update that adds NVM Express support

MSI has issued a press release today announcing their current mainboards based on the H97, Z97 and X99 chips will receive an BIOS that adds NVM Express (NVMe) support. Most SSDs currently use the SATA-3 interface but SSDs using the PCI-Express (PCIe) interface are becoming increasingly popular.

For the PCIe interface, NVMe has been developed which significantly improves both random and sequential performance by reducing latency, enabling high levels of parallelism, and streamlining the command. Another benefit is that all NVMe drives only require one driver, e.g Windows 7 and Windows 8 currently natively support the devices.

A list of MSI boards that can be updated to support NVMe can be found on their website, the BIOS updates have become available today as well. After the BIOS update NVMe SSDs will become bootable on 64-bit version of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and you'll be able to benefit from all other NVMe advantages.
