Netflix extends Android support to Latin America and Canada, update for 3.x tablets now available

Netflix isn't quite global, but that's not stopping the Los Gatos, CA company from thinking across borders.

The streaming rental service has announced subscribers in the U.S., Canada and Latin America can all experience its roster of instant streaming videos through Android tablets and smartphones. Additionally, 3.x Android tablets are now supported via a free app available in the Android Marketplace.

"With the added support for Android-powered devices, Netflix members have greater flexibility than ever in watching TV episodes and movies wherever and whenever they want," said Greg Peters, vice president of product development at Netflix. "We're always looking to provide members new ways to enjoy Netflix."

The updated app, listed as Netflix 1.5, works on Android 2.2, 2.3 and 3.x. Subtitles and alternate audio are also supported - a boon for non-English speaking customers.

Some kinks do exist. Android Marketplace reviewers complained about audio/visual lag, abrupt crashes and server connection errors. However, with a glowing 4.3 out of 5 star rating most seem satisfied.

Netflix's renewed support isn't surprising. Last month, The NPD Group found Android was the preferred mobile OS among consumers. Citing research from technology analyst Gartner, Netflix said Android will hold nearly half of the smart phone market in 2012.
