Netflix streaming iPhone app in the works?

Number one movie rentailer Netflix is curious to hear how interested subscribers are to use a mobile Netflix application customized for the Apple iPhone.

The app would be available only via Wi-Fi, most likely due to terms laid out between AT&T, Apple and Netflix, although the official details haven't been revealed.

"Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone," according to a Netflix survey.  "The selection availability to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes."

Netflix has kept its DVD rental business going, but has also expanded its online streaming service into the living room via Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, and game consoles.  Support for Netflix instant viewing is slated to come to the Nintendo Wii, which will make Netflix streaming available to all 3 major game consoles.

It was just a few months ago Netflix executives reportedly said they're not interested in the mobile market just quite yet.  It should be interesting to see what the survey results reveal, as Netflix has polled subscribers before, resulting in some services being created, while others have been passed over.

Even if consumer interest is relatively low right now, expect Netflix to help try to raise interest by clever marketing campaigns.  I don't have much interest in watching streaming content on my mobile phone, but there could be a niche market Netflix could tap into.
