Copy protection on 'The Hunger Games - Catching Fire' easily beaten

The new copy protections introduced on both the DVD and Blu-ray release of the movie 'The Hunger Games - Catching Fire' have been beaten soon after the release of the movie. Users on many forums reported difficulties in copying the discs, but both DVDFab and Slysoft tackled the issue within days.

Both discs contained new copy protections and soon after the developers of known backup software got their hands on the discs, the copy protection was dealt with.

Movie studios use all kind of protections to prevent users making a backup.  A protection called 'playlist obfuscation' adds multiple bogus playlists to a disc which tell  the backup software the movie is too long to fit on a disc. Backup software deals with this however and is able to pick the correct playlist, which solves the problem.

Also new Java based copy protections pop up, which is also the case on the Blu-ray release of the latest Hunger Games movie release. The Java based copy protections are making use of the  Blu-ray DRM feature called BD+. Unfortunately not many technical details are released, but so far none of them have been able to stop purchasers of the movie from making backups.

Another protection currently is use, but not used on this movie is the Blu-ray protection Cinavia. This protection is based on a watermark residing in the audio track of the movie. Even when the movie is recorded or copied, this watermark is duplicated and when it doesn't match the code of the disc, the protection will show a warning after 20 minutes and mute the sound.
