New Kinect hack puts you in Dead Space 2's giant metal boots

A new application for Microsoft's popular Xbox 360 Kinect hardware demonstrates what happens when you combine the burgeoning controller-less motion technology with a Nintendo Wii remote, a PC and a sci-fi horror game.

YouTube user kick755 designed a hack for EAs new "Dead Space 2" using all of the above, allowing a player to take control of protagonist Isaac Clarke in a novel way. Player movement is tracked with the Kinect hardware, while shooting mechanics are mapped to a Wii remote.

It admittedly looks a little awkward - notice that leaning seems to be what orients Isaac in a new direction, and using telekinesis to pick up and toss objects looks finicky. But for every little technical snag, other implementations impress: aiming with the gun-like Wii remote; stomping crawling monsters by actually stomping; and working up a sweat running around.

Fitness games - eat your heart out.

Microsoft's Kinect launched in North America on November 4th, 2010. "Dead Space 2" was released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on January 25th, 2011. (via Joystiq)
