New Zealand police: Megaupload founder Kim Schmitz was barricaded inside mansion during raid

Megaupload founder Kim Schmitz played a little game of hide-and-seek with the New Zealand police officers sent to apprehend him at his multimillion dollar Coatesville mansion on Thursday. Schmitz, also known as Kim Dotcom, was named this month in a U.S. Justice Department indictment along with six others for fueling a global “mega conspiracy.”

Detective Inspector Grant Wormald described the harrowing encounter as “not as simple as knocking at the front door.” To say that Schmitz refused to cooperate with the coordinated raid would be an understatement.

“Mr. Dotcom retreated into the house and activated a number of electronic locking mechanisms,” said Wormald. “While police neutralized these locks he then further barricaded himself into a safe room within the house which officers had to cut their way into.”

When the officers finally reached Schmitz, they noticed a sawed-off shotgun nearby, he said.

Following Schmitz’s detainment, authorities returned to his mansion and hauled away several expensive cars. Among those repossessed were a 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drop Head Coupe, a 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and a 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG baring the license plate “GUILTY.”

Schmitz appeared in court on Friday to face numerous charges leveled by the U.S. Department of Justice, including copyright infringement and racketeering. Flanked by alleged accomplices Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk in a video posted to YouTube by Russia Today, the foursome was denied bail.

Opened in 2005, Schmitz’s Megaupload faced mounting attention in 2011. Porn publisher Perfect 10 sued, while the RIAA filed a complaint on the site with the U.S. Trade Representative. The site was finally seized on Thursday, sparking a retaliatory DDoS attack led by hacker collective Anonymous. The group knocked offline sites belonging to Universal Music, the DOJ and FBI. The two government sites have since been restored, though UniversalMusic.com wouldn’t load as of press time.

It’s still unclear whether Schmitz will be extradited to the U.S. or not, though the DOJ is certainly keeping its finger crossed. The four defendants’ next scheduled court appearance is Monday. (via Torrent Freak)

Megaupload really isn't any different from MS Skydrive or Apple, Google and Amazon's online storage. And from what I can tell they did comply with DCMA takedown requests. What's the problem here?

You can easily encourage Warez uploaders to deposit their stuff on your site and comply with takedown notices. No problem.

Those filehosters get their revenue from advertising and the premium accounts. And who needs premium accounts with high bandwidth and low other restrictions? Yes, those that want to download Gigabytes a day. Of course all is Linux distros and self-made-pr0n.

We wipe lots of Warez (!) spam here, which is all deposited at certain file hosters. Why does one advertize Warez in the public? Well, the only good reason is to get new users and hopefully a few new paid "premium" accounts.

P.S. The reputation of Kim Schmitz has always been questionable.

Seems the entertainment industry pressured the US government to pressure the New Zealand government, who took action :-/

From verious articles, the Movie industry was upset because on MegaVideo they indexed, searched and removed what they could identify as copyright infringing material, but apperantly the MPAA thinks this is bad because they can't come in later to find out how bad the problem is. In other words they can't sue them for knowingly hosting illegal content. There are claims they "Paid" illegal uploaders, although I haven't seen or read of anyone who knows anything about that.

I'm still trying to figure out why Megaupload is illegal buy YouTube is not. In fact YouTube really does pay people to upload videos but go too far with the DCMA takedown process since it appears you don't have to do anything to prove you are the copyright owner and the process to get your rights (and advertising revenue) back is insanely difficult.

On the other hand, this is having the desired effect, at least one other service has stopped sharing services. Unfortunately there is nothing inherantly illegal with filesharing, millions of people do it legally every day, But because it could be used to share copyrighted material, the RIAA and MPAA want it banned. IF they had their way, most technology we use daily would be banned, although I am surprised they haven't gone for the Add a giant tax "For the artist", don't pay anything to the artist and sue infringers insane amounts for what should be fair use, and use proceeds to pay lawyers and executives. Oh, wait, they already have in some countries!

You can get expensive software including crack and serial from Youtube? An entire recent blockbúster movie as a whole?

Interesting.
