Although smartphones are used for many other things besides calling, the phone feature is for many still the most important one. The first user complained about the issue on December 20th last year and since then Google hasn't responded to the issue.

The issue tracker shows the issue is flagged with priority small while it's been starred by more than 335 people. Complaining  users report there is a temporary fix, after rebooting the phone it's possible to make phone calls with audio for a while.

The Nexus 4, built by LG, received an update to Android Lollipop 5.01 which included a fix for a SMS bug. Prior to the 5.01 update many Nexus users were unable to send SMS messages, another essential feature of a smartphone.
