Nintendo DSi XL launching next month

Nintendo announced it will release its DSI XL handheld gaming unit in North America on March 28.

Similar to earlier models, the $189 DSi XL will have two gaming screens -- but each screen has been made bigger.  The DSI XL's screens have multiple viewing angles, which Nintendo hopes will create a more social gaming environment.

Some gamers have longed for a DS with bigger screens, but also demanded battery life to remain reliable despite the larger screens.  It's unknown how the DSi XL's screens will impact battery life, but gamers hope it doesn't drain battery too quickly.

The DSi XL also has a new stylus that is longer and more closely mimics a pen.  Early reports say it's more ideal for extended gaming sessions, though the small stylus is still included with the DS as well.

The Japanese gaming company also plans to sell select digital books made specifically for the DS.

Nintendo has seen great demand for its DS models, and continues  to show interest in promoting it in the future.  In 2009, more than 11 million DS units were sold across the world.  NPD research also reveals Nintendo sold 420,000 DS units in Q4, while Sony sold just 100,000 PlayStation Portable models.

The company hopes to continue to attract third-party game developers to the DS and Wii platforms.  It has had success marketing its own games for both platforms, but needs third-party companies to get more involved in development.
