Nintendo follows up big 3DS sales with new 3D video recording

Nintendo's woebegone 3DS handheld has finally hit its stride. Several high-profile games for the system hit shelves this fall, and impressive global sales figures followed a huge August price drop. A new downloadable update released on Wednesday adds 3D video recording capabilities - the latest multimedia application for what the company has dubbed its "most connected system to date."

Users can record up to 10 minutes of glasses-free 3D video in either normal or stop-motion, said Nintendo. Other new features present in the latest update include Sleep Mode downloading, new content for the system's social networking-lite StreetPass mini-game and the ability to transfer game files from one 3DS to another.

Nintendo also upped the number of available 3DS Wi-Fi hotspots to over 28,000 across the U.S. and Canada. Some 1,000 Best Buy locations currently offer the service, revealed the Kyoto company.

One unsung new feature not covered in the official press release is the ability for players to instantly join a friend's game, provided they're OK with it. Players frustrated with the company's archaic online model (adding friends on Nintendo consoles and handhelds requires sharing and inputting long strings of alphanumeric "Friend Codes") may also be glad to hear at least one title - Mario Kart 7 - ditches that cumbersome practice, allowing players to simply add anyone they've raced against with a button press.
