Nvidia talks up its new quad-core chip for Android & Windows 8

Nvidia posted better than expected earnings today and the company CEO decided to take that opportunity to boast about their new quad-core chip.

Nvidia managed to pull better than expected earnings in the most recent fiscal quarter which ended in July.  The total profit reported for the graphics chip maker was $151.6 million a stark improvement from the $141 million loss posted in this same period last year.  Nvidia is projected to increase revenue by another 4-6% next quarter.  Most of the increase in revenue is thought to be from their graphics chips used alongside Intel's "Sandy Bridge" processors.

Along with the beefed up earnings Nvidia took an opportunity to brag about their new quad-core processor that they intend to use in Android and Windows 8 systems.  CEO Jen-Hsun Huang talked about the upcoming processor, dubbed the Kal-El processor.  Huang stated that the processor will be much more power efficient than the dual-core Tegra 2, "Kal-El is so much better performance than Tegra 2. And so much lower power. Very few people have internalized that Kal-El is lower power in every use case compared to Tegra 2."

Huang also addressed the company's investment in the Android platform saying, "We've made very, very large investments in the Google operating system. And we have a great working relationship with [Google]. As soon as the next-generation Kal-El processor goes into production we can run like the wind."

Android is not the only system Nvidia wants to push their new chip onto.  Huang also stated the company's interested in Windows 8.  "We're very bullish on Windows 8 for the second half of next year," said the CEO.

The full specs of this processor and exactly how much power it saves will be exciting to see.  The next wave of Android tablets have the potential to show a dramatic improvement in battery life just from this chip alone.
