One Microsoft concept in the works, One Windows to rule them all

During a recent conference, Microsoft's Julie Larson-Green, has given more insight in Microsoft's strategy. The company appears to be working on merging all Windows operating systems into a single OS. Larson-Green is Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Devices and Studios and said, "we have the Windows Phone OS. We have Windows RT and we have full Windows. We're not going to have three."

It pretty much explains why we have the Metro interface in Windows 8. Microsoft uses the same interface on the Xbox, Windows Phone and Windows RT, not using it in the Windows 8 desktop OS would break their strategy. Now the company has acquired Nokia it can also focus more on the hardware side and create more devices. And there also, Metro is a key factor,  as Larson-Green explains, "We have a great platform for building applications on top of those devices, an application platform that scales from mobile devices to giant large screen devices to your living room. "

Larson-Green also dreams of the future where when you use your desktop and have to travel, you continue with where you left on your tablet in the plane.  She explains, "we're working on a world where we make it easy for you to have many different devices in your life.  So signing in with your Live ID on a new device gives you back everything that you had on your old device."

The concept of all this is called One Microsoft which means that Microsoft will make it possible to run the same Windows on all kinds of devices. This  means phones, tablets, TVs, consoles and PCs will all have the same, unified Windows experience. We've seen something similar before in this keynote from 2006 where Bill Gates impressed but never really made it reality.
