Digital Europe, the organisation representing the European technology industry has published a logo that should help consumers to easily identify Ultra HD TVs. To be allowed to carry the logo the TV needs to have a HDMI 2.0 output with HDCP 2.2.
Besides that, there's more, together with the logo Digital Europe also published a list of requirements to which TV manufacturers have to adhere in order to be allowed to use the logo. The list published by the European organisation is more strict than the equivalent of the American CEA. In Europe TV manufacturers have to follow stricter rules market their TVs using the Ultra HD logo.
According to Digital Europe's list the resolution of the screen needs to be at least 3840 x 2160 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The input must be capable to receive that resolution over HDMI 2.0 with the HDCP 2.2 copy protection at at least 60 frames per second (fps) and minimal color depth of 8 bits based on the ITU color standard Rec 709. The Chroma subsampling has to be 4:2:0 at 50fps/60fps and 4:2:2 at 24fps/25fps/30fps. Audiowise the TV has to receive the PCM stereo signal over HDMI.
Most first generation Ultra HD TVs were not equipped with HDMI 2.0, however last year in September the first TV supporting the latest generation HDMI appeared on the market. Of the Ultra HD TVs that were announced this year the majority supports HDMI 2.0.
