Panasonic adds RoxioNow streaming to HDTV products

In another significant partnership in the home entertainment industry, Sonic Solutions and Panasonic announced that Roxio software will be included in UniPhier Panasonic products.

Sonic Solutions is well known for developing RoxioNow, popular movie download software, and said its software will be included with Panasonic Blu-ray players and web-enabled HDTVs.  This is a victory for Panasonic now that the company believes it can compete with Sony, Samsung and others in the 3D and streaming markets.

The UniPhier processor is a platform able to support Profile 2.0 using a single chip processor.  Panasonic’s third-generation UniPhier is a 45nm processor and has shrunk in size compared to the first two models.

“Our collaboration with Panasonic, and integration into its system-on-a-chip reference design, provides us with a tremendous opportunity to further expand the ecosystem of connected devices that are compatible with RoxioNow-powered services,” said Mark Ely, Sonic Executive VP, in a statement.  “This latest collaboration is additional proof that digitally delivered entertainment is now a must-have feature for consumer electronic devices.”

Pansonic products with Sonic software should begin to roll out sometime in late 2010/early 2011.

I’ve mainly paid attention to Panasonic’s 3DTV efforts, but it’s good to see the Japanese company also focus on streaming content for HDTVs and Blu-ray players.

RoxioNow is available through several different manufacturers and retailers, with the list including Blockbuster, Best Buy, Kmart- Sears, Lionsgate, Dell and Hewlett-Packard.  Using RoxioNow gives these companies a chance to offer streaming content using a quality software platform that Sonic’s partners don’t have to create themselves.

Panasonic and Sonic are both seeking content distribution deals with partners, as the HDTV manufacturer looks to add DirecTV 3D content support.  Best Buy and Sonic reached a deal to include Roxio software used on the Best Buy software installer.

In an interview between Forbes and CD Projekt CEO Marcin Iwinski, Iwinski said the truth is that DRM simply does not work.
