Pirated Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 do get a free legitimate Windows 10 version

Reddit users report that it's possible to convert pirated Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 installations to a legitimate Windows 10 version. Users with illegal installations activated by a KMS like KMSmicro report that they have a legitimate Windows 10 version after upgrading. KMS, an abbreviation for Key Management Service activates computers on a local network, eliminating the need for individual computers to connect to Microsoft. By using pirated versions, it's possible to activate Microsoft products like Windows and Office.

Several Reddit users report their Windows 7 and 8.1 installations activated through a pirated KMS version was successfully upgraded to a legitimate, activated Windows 10 version.  The method works by using the Media Creation tool that Microsoft provides, or through the KB3035583 update Microsoft distributed the last couple of weeks to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.

Microsoft has send mixed signals  on whether pirated would get a legitimate Windows 10 version when they upgraded. A Microsoft employee previously stated that all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users would get a free upgrade, later Microsoft clarified the information stating pirated Windows versions that upgrade to Windows 10 would not convert to legitimate versions.
