Plextor releases 64GB and 128GB SSD drives

Plextor has released its 64GB and 128GB solid-state drives that it announced late last month, with the manufacturer looking forward to a bright future of flash-based memory storage technology.

Plextor said its first generation SSDs are based on MLC non-volatile NAND flash memory that is able to provide faster speed using Marvell controller technology.

The 64GB PX-64M1S is available for $225, while the 128GB PX-128M1S is available for $400.  Both SSDs have a 2.5" form factor and include SATA II support.  Plextor's 64GB SSD offers 110MB/s read speeds and 65MB/s write speeds, while the larger SSD has 130MB/s read and 70MB/s write speeds.

Plextor didn't mention if the drives ship with Microsoft Windows 7 "trim" support that increases SSD performance in PCs.  Additional information regarding trim can be found at Microsoft's Windows 7 Center support site.

Each drive includes the "unique Wear Leveling algorithm" Plextor reportedly created to help increase the lifespan of its SSD drives.

Plextor is the latest computer company interested in the flash-based storage products, even though $225 and $400 remain high price tags for drives with just 64GB and 128GB storage.  The read/write speeds of each drive will make them competitive products, especially as the price of SSD products decrease.

Plextor joins a growing list of companies expected to jump further into an industry that should have a bright future in the coming years.  SanDisk, a flash memory manufacturer needs SSDs to gain additional marketshare, while Corsair and other popular PC companies also move into SSD storage.
