PowerDVD and Hitachi-LG to offer first Ultra HD Blu-ray playback on PC

Cyberlink today announced it received the required certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) to allow Ultra HD Blu-ray playback. PowerDVD is the world’s first software player to be certified and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback should become available in 2017.

Taiwanese Cyberlink is also the only company listed as licensee for BD-ROM 4.0, which is how the BDA appears to be called Ultra HD Blu-ray. Interesting is that also one BD-ROM 4.0 PC drive licensee is listed,  Hitachi LG Data Storage (HLDS).

Playback on the PC also paves the way of breaking the AACS 2.0 copy protection used on Ultra HD Blu-ray. The developer of AnyDVD has stated that he would look at the possibility once Ultra HD Blu-ray PC drives would become available.

The Ultra HD Blu-ray format delivers 4K content, offering a 3840x2160 resolution, but also a expanded color range, provision of both high dynamic range and high-frame rate (up to 60fps) content, and support for the latest object-based immersive sound formats.
