Razer announces feature packed $2,800 Blade gaming laptop

Not content with crafting headsets and controllers, Razer has thrown its hat into the portable PC gaming ring. The game hardware manufacturer announced on Friday what it's billing as the "first true gaming laptop" - the $2,800 Razer Blade. Of course, customers won't just be paying for painfully obvious wordplay.

The 17-inch, HD Blade - which was co-developed by Intel - is powered by an 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 2640M Processor and offers a 320 GB hard drive. Razer's plan to cover the constantly shifting requirements of PC gaming means including an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics processor and 2 GB of GDDR5 Video Memory. Surprisingly, the powerful (yet expensive) device comes in a small package: it's .88 inches tall when closed, and weighs just under seven pounds.

The California-based company believes pulling out all the stops and catering to hardcore PC gamers with cash to spare is the best choice, citing Hewlett-Packard's floundering PC business and an overall "industry slump."

"The Razer Blade was designed to give gamers a laptop they could truly use on the go," said Min-Liang Tan, Razer CEO and Creative Director. Tan believes that the inclusion of the Switchblade user interface will help the Blade "define the new standard for gaming experiences on a laptop."

Switchblade is Razer's own video game-specific interface technology that boasts 10 customizable keys and multi-touch LCD panel that delivers different control and menu options depending on whether or not a mouse is plugged in.

Razer hopes to unsheathe the Blade (sorry!) this holiday season. It's unclear whether customers will balk at the steep price tag or get on board. (via Ars Technica)
