Researchers: more laptops will have SSDs instead of traditional HDDs by 2018

By 2018 there will be more laptops sold with SSDs than with HDDs, according to a report from research firm DRAMeXchange. The researchers foresee a large increase of demand for laptops with SSDs and expects that trend to continue.

Demand even increases while prices of NAND flash based storage have stabilized and hardly decline. Slight supply shortages have even caused MLC based SSDs prices to rise slightly (about 0.5%). On the other hand, prices of TLC based SSDs fell slightly with about 1%. It's also expected that mainly TLC SSDs will be fitted into laptops because of its low price.

When it comes to the interface the SSDs use, it's expected that SATA based SSDs will remain the most popular interface on the market. PCIe based SSDs will only make up 20% of the market this year, demand of SATA SSDs is still dominant.

Last year, 25% of all sold laptops featured a SSD, which according to the DRAMeXchange report increases with 2-3% each quarter. This year about 33% of all laptops should feature a SSD and if the trend continues 56% of all laptops will be fitted with a SSD in 2018.
