RIM drops the price on all PlayBook tablet models to $299

The BlackBerry PlayBook hasn't been selling particularly well and Research in Motion (RIM) has dropped the price on the device in the past. Now, the company is ringing in the new year with another sale on their tablet and this one offers a steep discount.

RIM has discounted all PlayBook models to $299. Yup, you read that correctly the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models of the tablet are all priced at exactly the same amount. That amounts to discounts of $200, $300 and $400.

This price on whichever size PlayBook you desire is currently available on RIM's online store. As of this writing all three models are still in stock with shipping times of 7-14 days. I wouldn't expect that the 64GB model would last too long at $299, but extra storage aside, it's still more expensive than a Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet which are arguably a better deal for their hackability alone.

If you really want to own a PlayBook at a very reasonable price, the site lists the sale as lasting until 2/4/2012, which gives you about a month to make a decision. That should also get you a device in time for PlayBook OS 2.0 if RIM's previous claims are to be believed.

It was really just a matter of time before RIM started seriously slashing the price on these tablets. The loss on the PlayBook is killing the companies ability to make any money.

Are any of you folks interested in the PlayBook? Does the $299 price point make you any more interested? Let us know what you think in the comments.
