RunCore Xapear SSD features RFID security & SMS deletion

RunCore, the company which recently released its “Mission Impossible” style self-destructing SSD has now announced its Xapear USB SSD that features RFID security protection as well as remote data deletion. This SSD connects by USB 2.0 and is configured into two partitions, one public and one hidden. The public partition appears upon plugging in the SSD, while the private partition only appears after swiping the supplied paired RFID key on top of the drive.

For security, the hidden partition cannot be detected by users without a paired RFID key. The private partition can also be quickly dismounted while connected just by swiping the RFID key again over the SSD.

For added protection, the SSD features a built-in GSM connection with an internal SIM card that can be linked with an individual mobile phone. Should the SSD go missing, the owner can send it an SMS that will cause the SSD to overwrite all its data, making it impossible to recover any stored data. Once the data is deleted, the device finally responds with a confirmation SMS.

The RunCore Xapear SSD comes supplied with a leather wallet, 2 RFID keys, user manual, installation disc and guarantee card. Apart from the 60GB model demonstrated in their video, they have not announced what capacities this will come in or whether it will also be available in USB3, especially considering that USB2 would limit performance to like a typical USB flash drive.
