Russia blocks entire Wikipedia while awaiting removal of drugs article

Russian internet providers have to block access to the local version of Wikipedia because the site hosts an article about hash. The media authority Roskomnadzor has decided the entire Russian Wikipedia has to be blocked until the page is removed.

Wikimedia, the organisation behind Wikipedia, doesn't want to remove the page because it doesn't want to censor the site. Because internet providers are not able to block access to individual pages, they have to block access to the entire Russian version of Wikipedia.

Roskomnadzor is able to block the pages based on the Russian law that forbids instructions on the preparation of drugs. The Russian Wikipedia page about hash describes in detail how to make hash from cannabis plants.

Wikimedia argues that Wikipedia users can democratically decide to change the information on the page. When Roskomnadzor previously threatened with a block, editors already made changes to the page. It seems they weren't sufficient for Roskomnadzor to not proceed with the blockade.

It's not the first time the Russian government blocks websites. Also Reddit was temporarily blocked because of one subreddit about psychedelic mushrooms.
