Samsung announces 2TB external portable SSD, only weighs 51 grams

Samsung today announced a new external portable SSD with a capacity of 2TB. The new T3 was announced during CES in Las Vegas and the SSD is also available in capacities of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB. Despite the large capacity the drive is very light with a weight of 51 grams.  Also its size makes it a very portable device, it measures only 7.4 x 5 x1.05 cm.

The T3 SSDs are the successors to the T1 external portable SSDs which were slightly lighter and smaller, but according Samsung the metal casing is better protected against pressure and it should make the drive survive a fall of 2 meters. The T3 SSDs also feature Thermal Guard which should avoid overheating of the drive.

The drive is able to transfer data with speeds up to 450MB/s and can connect to a computer using the USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type C connector.

Users who don't have an USB 3.1 Type C connector can use an adapter to connect the drive using USB3.0 or USB 2.0. For security the T3 drives are outfitted with optional AES 256-bit hardware encryption that, according to Samsung,  doesn’t affect performance. With an Android mobile app it's possible to manage and access content.

Samsung has not disclosed any further technical details such as the used NAND and controller.

The Samsung Portable SSD T3 will be first launched in February, 2016 in countries including the United States, China, Korea and select European countries and will subsequently become available worldwide. Samsung has not provided any pricing details.
