Samsung announces 64GB chip, 32GB microSD

Samsung has rolled out two new flash-based storage products designed for mobile products, including a new 64GB moviNAND flash memory chip and 32GB micro SD card.

The Samsung moviNAND flash is twice the amount of storage capacity offered in the Apple iPhone, and other popular consumer products available today.  Samsung also has 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB moviNAND products available.  The 64GB flash drives entered mass production last month, with OEMs now openly testing the 32GB model.

Toshiba and several other manufacturers have 64GB chips in the works, but Samsung is expected to reach market first, as long as the company avoids any major delays.

"Samsung's high-density memory solutions bring the storage capacity levels of computing systems to small, mobile devices," said Don-Soo Jun, Samsung VP of memory marketing, in a statement.

The new 32GB microSD card is now being used by OEMs, and officially enters mass production sometime in February.  The chips are made using the company's 30-nanometer manufacturing process, and makes use of eight 32GB NAND components along with a controller.  The card itself is just 1 millimeter thick, with the part of the card used to connect to a gadget measuring just 0.7 millimeters.

The price of flash-based memory storage has dropped significantly over the past 18 months, with manufacturers now releasing cheaper chips with increased storage.  Flash memory is especially popular in mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, and other consumer gadgets -- and is now being widely adopted in smartphones.

As higher-capacity storage memory becomes more commonplace in the market, expect it to become even more widely used in smartphones and similar technology products.
