Samsung announces new consumer level SSD line, the EVO 840

Samsung is introducing a new line of consumer SSD's in August of this year, called the EVO 840.  This new line will come in five different capacities, from 120gb up to 1tb in size.

According to Samsung:  The new Samsung SSD 840 EVO line-up makes use of the industry's most compact 10-nanometer class 128Gb high-performance NAND flash memory, which Samsung began mass producing in April. With these chips and Samsung's proprietary multi-core MEX controller, the Samsung SSD 840 EVO achieves unrivaled value for performance with improved sequential read and write speeds.

The new line of SSD's promises greater speeds than the previous 840 models.  The 1TB 840 EVO will have sequential read/write speeds of 540MB/s reading and 520MB/s writing.  And this 1tb drive will have improved random read/write capability, with 98,000 IOPS (Input Output operations per second)read and 90,000 IOPS write performance.  But even the smaller drives will have vastly improved performance, with the 250gb drive offering roughly twice the speed of the currently available model.

No word on price yet, but with Micron already in the game with their 1TB drive, Samsung will need to be competitive.

The drives should be available August 5th.
