Samsung buys another SSD caching software developer

Samsung has bought Proximal Data,  an American developer of SSD caching software. It's unknown how much the Korean tech giant paid for the company. Proximal Data was founded in 2011 and develops server caching software with I/O intelligence that works within virtualized systems.

Caching software improves storage performance by controlling and storing frequently used data more efficiently. Proximal Data holds core technology in the caching software area and has been marketing AutoCache software, something the company describes as "a virtual cache storage solution that dramatically increases virtual machine density and performance by eliminating I/O bottlenecks, without disrupting IT operations."

Samsung hopes to strengthen its position in the enterprise SSD software market, the company writes in its press release. "With this acquisition, we will be able to further expand our SSD business in the server and data center markets, while continuing to provide the most advanced SSD solutions to customers", a Samsung spokesman said.

The Proximal Data move follows Samsung’s acquisition of NVELO in 2012, a US-based SSD caching software creator. Samsung has applied NVELO’s advanced caching software to its branded SSDs since 2013.

Caching SSDs are mainly used in notebook where the price of a SSD drives up the entire system price. Caching SSDs are a relative cheap way of improving performance over HDD only notebooks while still provide decent storage capacities.
