Samsung desktop LCDs are also TVs

Samsung is now shipping a pair of computer monitors that try their very best to function as HDTVs, too.

Both the 23-inch 2333HD and the 19-inch 933HD+ have built-in TV tuners, letting you watch broadcast television over the air. They also include many of the inputs you'd expect to find on a television, such as component jacks and HDMI in addition to the VGA and DVI inputs you'd want for a computer monitor. A pair of small speakers -- 3 watts in the 2333 HD -- are built-in with Dolby Digital Audio, with a SPDIF optical audio input. The 2333HD adds a second HDMI input, coming in handy for a game console or a Blu-ray player.

A remote control is sold separately.

For technical specs, both monitors have 16:9 aspect ratios, with the 933HD+ supporting 720p (1360 x 768 resolution) and the 2333HD playing 1080p (1920 x 1080). The monitors have a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 5 ms pixel response time, and the viewing angle is 160 degrees.

I like the idea of monitors that doubles as a TV, because there are times where I wouldn't mind gathering up my gaming consoles and having a play session at my desk (specifically, when my fiancee wants to watch television and I'd rather play Uncharted 2). For that purpose, the combination of HDMI and built-in speakers would come in handy, though it's nice to have a TV tuner on there as well.

At $250 for the 19-inch 933HD+ and $330 for the 23-inch 2333HD, the price is not unreasonable compared to what you'd pay for either an HDTV or a monitor in those sizes. They're shipping now.
