Samsung fixes 840 EVO SSD read performance degradation issue

Samsung today released a fix for the performance degradation of its 840 EVO series SSDs. The fix and accompanying firmware upgrade ensure that read performance of old data doesn't decrease, like one would expect. The tool solves an issue of which Samsung 840 EVO SSD owners suffered from for a couple of months already. Blocks of data of more than a month old was read by the drive at 50 - 60 MB/s, while more recent written blocks were read at 450 MB/s or higher.

The "Samsung Performance Restoration Tool" requires 10% free disk space to do its job. Samsung recommends to make a backup of the data stored on the SSD before the tool is used. The upgrade reboots the system when done and only works on 2.5" and mSATA 840 EVO SSDs. The tool also only supports PCs with AMD and Intel chipsets, running on Windows. Samsung promises to release the tool for OS X and Linux at the end of this month.

More information and a download of the tool can be found here. Read the installation guide before you start.
