Samsung releases 2TB versions of their 850 SSD series

Samsung has announced two new solid state drives with an unprecedented capacity.  The drives are the SSD 850 Pro and SSD 850 EVO, both with 2TB of storage.  These two drives are currently the largest capacity SSD's on the market.  The 850 series previously had a top size of 1TB, with the Pro released to market for about a year, and the EVO  1TB version on sale for approximately seven months.

The new drives from Samsung will not come cheaply.  The 850 Pro 2TB is priced at $1000 and the 850 EVO 2TB is $800.

Both of the 850 models use Samsung's 3D vertical flash memory technology, and both support Samsung's TurboWrite, which helps accelerate writing speed during data transfers by creating a write buffer in the SSD.  TurboWrite is off by default, and only works with the Windows operating system, since it has to be activated through the Samsung Magician software, which is Windows only.  The SSD's will work in other operating systems, just not with TurboWrite.

The Pro drive is slightly faster than the EVO, has greater endurance, and has a much longer warranty at 10 years versus the 5 year warranty for the EVO.  Most consumers will not need the additional features of the Pro however.

These drives will solve issues of storage space, especially for laptops that have only one drive, but the cost is prohibitive at the moment.  The suggested prices for these two drives may be much higher than what we see from retail shops.  At least, we can hope so.
