Samsung to open new LCD production facility in 2013

On Monday Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced it had broke ground on a new $3 billion Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel manufacturing plant to be constructed in Suzhou, China. The facility, which should be active by early 2013, is the company's latest attempt to solidify its role in a competitive LCD market.

The expensive undertaking is being spearheaded by Samsung Suzhou LCD (SSL) - a joint venture between Samsung, Suzhou Industrial Park and TCL Corporation that the company claims was created with the express purpose of simplifying LCD panel production. Upon completion, the 600,000 square-meters facility is expected to produce 100,000 glass substrates a month. Samsung believes the addition of the factory to the Suzhou Industrial Park, an area already known for churning out consumer electronics, will cement its position as "China's largest advanced LCD production cluster."

Wonkie Chang, the President of Samsung's LCD sector, explained the move in a speech given at the groundbreaking ceremony.

"Samsung Suzhou LCD sets a new precedent as a strategic joint venture between China’s leading TV maker TCL, leading LCD manufacturer Samsung Electronics and the center of the Chinese IT industry Suzhou Industrial Park," Chang said. "Through this investment, Samsung Electronics LCD Business aims to contribute to the development of the LCD display industry."

The SSL team-up, announced in April, marks just one effort by Samsung within the realm of LCD manufacturing. The company recently detailed another partnership with 3D glasses maker RealD to create new LCD TVs and PC monitors with higher quality 3D capabilities that rival those found in theaters.
