Samsung Unveils new Exynos chip

In a press release today technology heavyweight Samsung has revealed details of its latest and greatest state of the art processor aimed at an ever increasing range of portable devices.

Samsumg Exynos 5 Octa

Labelled the Exynos 5 Octa Samsung's latest baby contains four ARM Cortex®-A15™ processors running at 1.8GHz with four additional Cortex-A7™cores running at 1.3 GHz. These newly designed cores make the chip 20% more power efficient than previous designs.

A significant addition though is the very much increased GPU power which Samsung claim is being used more and more frequently for processing tasks. The GPU can will therefore be used not only for enhanced 3D and full HD Wi-Fi graphics but also for accelerating general computing tasks that normally task the main processing cores.

All this graphics prowess is driven by a six-core ARM® Mali™-T628 GPU processor which Samsung claim is an industry first and will not only double GPU processing power but will also set new industry leading standards for data processing.

The GPU also supports the OpenGL® ES 3.0 and Full Profile Open CL 1.1 standards and is scheduled for mass production in August.
