Samsung unveils world's first 4TB portable 2.5" HDD

Samsung has announced the world's highest capacity USB-powered 2.5" hard disks, the 4TB M3 portable and P3 Portable, both with a thickness of just 0.78" (20mm), just 0.1" thicker than their 2TB model. Until now, such capacity was only available with a bulkier 3.5" type form factor that generally requires a separate power supply.

The 4TB hard drive inside (Spinpoint M10P 4TB) achieves its capacity by using a higher aerial density of 800GB per platter, making it the highest in the world. Both drives weigh 8.3oz (235g) and connect by USB3, which also provides their power. Being bus-powered makes them ideal for laptop users where they can be used without depending on a nearby power outlet.

These drives will be available late June through its authorised distributors. So far no further technical information has been announced such as their throughput or power consumption.
