The latest Secure Digital High Capacity card from SanDisk is reportedly the world’s fastest for its size, according to the company.
The SanDisk Extreme SDHC Card reads and writes at up to 30 MB per second. It’s designed with DSLR and high definition video cameras in mind, able to transfer 160 minutes of full HD (1920×1080) video at 24 Mb per second.
SanDisk is using the new Class 10 specification that emerged in Panasonic SD cards earlier this year, but they’re a little bit faster than Panasonic’s cards, which only reach 22 MB per second.
Along with the 32 GB card, all of SanDisk’s other SDHC offerings will be bumped up from Class 6 to Class 10 when the new card ships in August . Pricing wasn’t announced, but imagine the range will cost about the same as it does now, from about $40 to near $200.
Career photographers, as OhGizmo points out, will be interested in SDHC as a cheaper alternative to other DSLR storage methods. Personally, I’d like to see higher capacity SD cards with faster transfer speeds in other settings. We’ve heard about SD card movie kiosks, and a recent Wii update made SD the storage format of choice for anyone downloading lots of online games. A speed boost certainly makes those ideas more feasible.
